Compression socks, also known as compression stockings or support socks, are specialized garments designed to apply gentle pressure to the lower legs. They are typically made of elastic materials that provide graduated compression, meaning the pressure is highest at the ankles and gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. The primary purpose of compression socks is to improve blood circulation in the legs, as they help to squeeze the veins and muscles, aiding in the return of blood to the heart. Types

While stockings that extend to the thigh or waist help reduce blood pooling in the legs and help prevent orthostatic hypotension. 

Graduated compression stockings 

The level of compression within these stockings are the strongest at the ankle and gradually weaker towards the top. They are designed for mobility and to meet certain strength and length medical specifications. These stockings usually require professional fitting by a medical professional. 

Anti-embolism stockings

This compression stocking reduces the possibility of deep vein thrombosis. Like graduated stockings, they provide gradual/gradient compression. However, the level of compression differs from the previous type. Anti-embolism stockings are usually designed for those who are not mobile.

Non Medical support hosiery

Non-medical compression socks usually don’t require a prescription to obtain them. This type includes elastic support stockings and flight compression socks, both sold as potential relief for tired, aching legs. These deliver uniform compression throughout, with less pressure than prescription compression socks. Individuals can find these types of compression socks/stockings online or in most pharmacies.
